Place the tubes throughout the orchard or garden area, before the cold sets in. Spacing will vary depending on acreage, layout, and crop type, but the goal is to create an even distribution of coverage. The setup process is simple and can be done well in advance.
Light the tubes when temperatures begin dropping below the crop’s critical temperature (often between 28–32°F, depending on growth stage). Early activation allows for smoke buildup and optimal heat retention. Each tube produces a thick, stable smoke for approximately 25 minutes or more, with no additional maintenance required.
As the smoke rises, it forms a blanket-like layer above the ground, slowing the escape of heat and reducing frost formation. In most conditions, this protective layer can help maintain crop temperature for up to 2 hours, sometimes longer, depending on wind, humidity, and overall weather conditions.
